I know it’s currently in fashion to criticize the rich, but buying a passport is no less fair than acquiring one any other way. If you were born in Switzerland and not Sudan for example, you have a very different life in front of you simply because of a geographical accident of birth.
Temporary is fine if it buys us the time to make the switch to permanent and sustainable carbon neutrality. The problem now is that rate of progress toward net zero is far below where it should be. Wishful thinking won’t change that .

“Genocide” is a word that should be used sparingly. Just like homicide is used to describe killing a person, genocide means killing a people. Persecution of minorities, though horrific does not always rise to the level of genocide.
In the struggle between democracy and dictatorship, it is crucial that democracies tell the truth in plain language. Dictatorships will always lie and obfuscate to conceal their true nature. Democracies can tell it like it is. Bear this in mind when deciding whether to call something a genocide.
It’s only a problem if you allow your personal worldview to affect your moderation… a tendency that sadly most moderators have. I’ve found lemmy.ml to be one of the more permissive instances where viewpoints of all sides are permitted. Unfortunately many others (you know who you are) are in danger of becoming walled gardens and echo chambers.
If you are so fragile that you need to be protected from a troll then maybe the internet is not the right place for you.
I don’t know how “Liberal” came to be synonymous with fragile snowflake. People have been misusing the word for ages … especially in the US. The original Liberal (and I’m proud to claim to be one) puts free speech front and center of their world view. It’s the cornerstone of democracy. And free speech also means the freedom to offend … it’s a price well worth paying.
Lemmy is more than worth it just for the lack of “he gets us” ads alone.

Shadow banning is Orwellian . something you might expect from the CCP instead of a supposedly progressive online forum. If you’re going to ban someone at least have the decency to let them know they are banned.

Even if they lose 50% (unlikely) the changes they make will still be more lucrative for them. The people who leave are probably not their most profitable demographic in the first place. The new API fees will easily make up for that. Twitter was the same … as much as people predicted it’s demise it’s more profitable now than it ever was.
I’m just hugely happy and grateful to the people behind Lemmy whose hard work and unselfish behavior allowed us all to benefit.
User caps might be a good way to decentralize and ensure that we don’t end up with just a few mega-instances. If there were a page showing available instances with percent of max users then people could use that when selecting.
Since communities (aka subreddits) are hosted on different servers (instances) I thought I would need a separate account on each instance to be able to post them (kept getting “not logged in” message).
Once I actually read the instructions everything was good. One account (choose the instance you want) and then use search … but you must enter the remote instance url exactly as written… no wildcats or anything.
The thing is free speech should apply to all opinions, not just those you don’t like. There are hate speech laws on the books but the bar is set high and it’s done for good reasons. If someone incites violence or makes threats then they should be prosecuted. But being offensive does not meet the bar of hate speech.
I haven’t felt this excited about an online community since r/wallstreetbets and GMC to the moon.
I just tried to post a comment in the Colombia community and I got the error "language not allowed . Does anyone know what could cause that? I tried Spanish and English and same thing.
My parents were British and they used to have two washing bowls. Pile the dirty dishes into one and fill with warm water and dish soap. Clean water in the second bowl for rinsing. After a while the second bowl builds up residual soap so it needs to be emptied and refilled. I figure I use the same amount of water rinsing under a running faucet. But the soak thing is a great tip - leaving dishes in water to soak makes cleaning them so much easier.
