All these manufacturers collect tons of data. There is no reason range estimates can’t be better.

Seems like this is important enough that a trusted 3rd party tester should probably become the go to source for these numbers. If Tesla had any balls they would simply be transparent with their data. I’m sure they know what each customer is getting on their average charge to distance ratio. Massive data set should produce a pretty solid real world average.

My point exactly. Maybe this data should be required to be disclosed.

My car just tracks the energy use over the last X kilometers and adapts the range accordingly. Of course it doesn’t know if the next X kilometers will be all uphill or downhill so it’s till just an estimate but it’s definitely not exaggerating in a problematic way.

…the article is referring to range claims on the website/adverts not in car/on the dashboard.

Mine too. I more mean that what is put on the sticker for sales. That should be an accurate average range for normal use.

Yes we can haggle over “normal use” but the bottom line is that the ranges advertised should be better representative of reality.

Not the car, the company. Tesla records every mile driven by every model of tesla car. They can give the actual true average range as the general estimate per model. Instead, they intentionally overestimated the range and now are begrudgingly adjusting it because the DOJ opened a probe to investigate them for fraud.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Tesla has lowered the range estimates across several Model Y, S, and X vehicles in the US, reducing the figure on certain trims by up to six percent.

Estimates for the Model S Plaid have also been updated — more specifically, the configuration with 19-inch wheels which has fallen from 396 miles to 359.

Drive Tesla reports that the changes are related to two things after reviewing internal company documents.

First, are “comfort and functionality improvements” made by Tesla that require more energy, and second is the implementation of revised EPA testing requirements that result in a “higher consumption and a slight decrease in overall range.”

Last October, the DOJ opened a probe into Tesla’s estimated mileage following reports that many of its figures were intentionally inflated.

Update January 5th, 8:18AM ET: Added report from Drive Tesla on reasons for the revised range estimates.
