The plot of Pokemon is the kid bounding down the stairs the morning he turns 10 and announcing that he’s going to do all of those things and the mom is just like, “Fine. Please call sometimes.”
If you actually go back to your home city there is literally nothing to do there.
You would have thought that at some point they would have added some special item or quest that you got if you actually went back but nope. In every game of Pokémon I have ever played there is no incentive to return to your home city and talk to your mother.
If Red/Ash’s mom married Professor Oak, would he call Blue/Gary (Oak’s grandson) his stepson? Stepdad? And would Giovanni (Blue’s father) be his stepfather? Stepson?
And why does Game Freak refuse to answer my emails?
