That’s early adopter pain for you. In Europe there is one standard, and in the US, we’re getting there. Yes it’ll be a pain for a while that people with CCS ports will need to use adapters at NACS chargers and vice versa, but we’re settling on the underlying CCS technology being the standard, so it’ll just be a matter of connector. Much better than the three standards we had very recently (add chademo)

Honestly there’s juuuuust enough latency and occasional streaming artifacts that it just got on my nerve. I’m super sensitive to stuff that that. Also my internet generally is good enough, but my actual LAN isn’t great, because I’m too cheap to upgrade my networking equipment. I’ve got gigabit fiber to the house, but I’ve got a rats nest of cat6 through my walls, a bunch of unmanaged switches, and a mesh WiFi setup, some with a wired backhaul, some wireless (because I wasn’t able to get Ethernet to those rooms), so things like game streaming just don’t work that well for me.

Plus like I said, it just feels less wasteful to put my PC where I’ll actually use it. And it’s not like I’ve abandoned my steam deck; I’m just not using it to even try to play big AAA 3D games anymore because I don’t need to

This is basically my plan too (minus the travel). I realized my gaming PC was only used for discord, Spotify, and web browsing since I spend exactly zero minutes per day in my office outside of work hours.

So today I decided tonight move my desktop down to the living room so I can play PC games on the couch (mainly games that don’t run well/look good on deck)

But that leaves me without a discord/spotify/browsing PC (I keep my work and personal usage completely separate), so I’m just going to dock my steam deck to my monitor instead. Upside is much lower power usage too

I’ve already seen number 1 happen. I’ve had a completely unacceptable amount of non-nsfw tagged porn hit my front page being posted to various Lemmy.world communities, all by shitjustworks users. I’m getting pretty close to abandoning the platform myself because I don’t need that shit coming up on my phone when I’m just trying to browse

Edit: that said, I’m not going back to Reddit. I’ll just abandon this type of site altogether and spend more meaningful time with my family and read more books

Yeah, I’m cautiously optimistic that if they do truly join the fediverse, we’ll finally have our real twitter replacement (aka relatively community friendly tech that’s accessible to people who don’t want to hear the word instance, AND the big benefit that basically everybody already has an instagram account). I haven’t used twitter since the musk takeover, but a lot of people whose opinions and reporting I care about still do. Most of them never bothered with the migration to mastodon, although lots of them are on bluesky. I’m hoping that the easy of availability of Threads gets them over there, and that the fediverse connection doesn’t take too long so I can start to interact with them via Mastodon without having to agree to all those permissions. Sorry, kinda lost the plot there.

I wish I could say the same honestly. I mean, I don’t really miss browsing Reddit, but I miss some of the smaller communities that haven’t made their way over here (or are so tiny here that there’s no discussion), and I hate how many of my Google queries point me to Reddit links because I refuse to open them on my phone

Yeah, I hit a point around 2018 where I went from being a huge fan of Google’s to switching to iOS and trying to degoogle my life as much as possible (but also not wholly relying on one company for anything. I still have Google photos, but I also have local backups of all my photos, plus they’re in OneDrive and iCloud for example)

Yep, I was having that issue with non steam games. I installed the beta today although I didn’t have time to actually play anything so I can’t say if they still get stuck…

Apple, honestly. I’m a windows and Linux guy primarily, but nobody makes a laptop that feels as premium, has incredibly battery life, and holds up over time as Apple.

After 20 years of shitty windows laptops (which I would inevitably put Linux on for better performance as the hardware degraded), we bought my wife an m1 MacBook air right when they first came out. Three years later and it’s still at 98% battery health, the keyboard and trackpad still feel great, and it performs as well as the day we bought it. I don’t play league so I can’t vouch for how it specifically runs but there are articles out there saying it’s possible

Man, that looks awesome. I’d love to get an e-bike but I haven’t yet for two reasons:

1. Money lol
2. I use cycling as a form of exercise and I don’t trust that I’d continue doing that once I don’t have to

Edited to add: It’s worth mentioning that I don’t live in an area that’s remotely safe to replace driving with cycling. My neighborhood abuts a 55mph road and to get into town involves taking the 70mph interstate. You can take the back roads but they’re super hilly and twisty and foresty and visibility is horrible. I have seen people on bikes, but every time I do I wonder how they’ve avoided getting hit by a car, especially considering the monster trucks people drive around here. Cycling will unfortunately likely remain just a hobby for me for the forseeable future because I love my house and neighborhood and have no plans to move; I just have to be cool with driving (which I am; I love my car)

I don’t know the answer to any of your questions, but the duplicate communities thing is definitely an interesting problem to have. I mean, reddit had plenty of duplicate communities as well, but they each tended to build up their own personality which I always found interesting.

For example, I subscribe to TeslaMotors and TeslaLounge on reddit (I drive a model 3) and I find them both super valuable, but they’re also super different. TeslaMotors tends to be breaking news but overly positive and gets grumpy whenever you post anything remotely negative about the company or its cars. TeslaLounge is much more realistic, where people can freely talk about the things they love about their car, but also the quirks and negatives without getting flamed.

I haven’t tried the demo this time around, so I’m not sure if it’s different from the last next fest, but I really enjoyed it back then. Not all the steam world games are for me, but I really love the aesthetic and that they just throw every genre at it to see what sticks. I’m excited for this to come out to play on steam deck

A few years ago I hit a point where the Google graveyard got so large that I no longer trust them with any of my stuff. I know the mantra is to always have multiple backups of important stuff, but I’ve started doing Google drive, OneDrive, iCloud, AND local (own cloud) copies of stuff because you just never know when Google is going to decide to kill Google maps or Google photos or whatever.
