It depends on what do you mean by “2nd position”. I mean, imagine the Venus on the opposite side of the orbit, and Mercury on the same side of the orbit as Earth. In that case, the distance from Earth to Mercury would be only 0.6 au, while distance from Earth to Venus would be 1.7 au.
Alright, I came across some researchers who were keen on validating this. It appears quite credible. You can view the results of their simulation here: Digital Debunking: Using Your Head to Extend Your Car Remote Range

Wow, you’re absolutely correct!
The average distance from Earth to Mercury is about 1.04 astronomical units (au), which is the average distance between Earth and the Sun.
In comparison, the average distance between Earth and Venus is approximately 1.14 au, while the average distance between Earth and Mars is around 1.7 au.
You can check that in Wolfram Alpha.
I tried several of them, but currently stuck on Toot!
I like their interface concept, it’s quite informative and helpful for a reader.
There was an attempt to patch the server to the first release candidate two days ago. It didn’t went well: 500 error appeared, and the patch was reverted. You may see the details here: https://lemmy.world/post/226641
It seems like this concept is “orthogonal” to the current federation concept, proposed by the ActivityPub protocol.
In the proposed case, the instances act as a pure “computational and storage fabric” or some kind of a “cdn” of a service, without any “personality” incorporated in them.
So I would not say that this is “better” or “worse”. It is just another concept.
It is awesome. Very stable for such an early release.
Oh boy! By the way, there is such a huge ammount of fediverse services… By the way, WTF is Misskey? And how is has 1M users?
Done and done. Thank you for your great support of the community!
By the way, users, registered on other instances still can’t see the list of communities from the link that have been shared. They can see only the one SFW community on that list. It seems, that if you want users to be able to subscribe, you should manually create a list with a list of links to the communities.
That’s a great usage of the bot! :0)))
