Omg this is devastating

I’ve just started learning Rust, so I’ve been working through The Book and Rust by Example to get familiarity with the language before diving into any projects. Coming from a C++ background, I’ve been surprised at how similar and simultaneously completely different Rust is from C++, and I’ve run into a lot of things that seemed completely bizzare to me (like the whole immutable variable default and shadowing) that I initially disliked until I looked into the reasoning and became wholly on board with the systems.

I’m planning on developing a cute little pet project for a relativistic/geometric time system, where the current time is determined not by arbitrary time zones but coordinates on the earth. I’ll probably post some updates once I start working on it ^͜

I’ve been trying to use Ardour for the first time as part of my ongoing process of replacing all the proprietary software in my workflow to open source software. My hope is that Ardour can replace Audition and/or ProTools for me, but as of right now I’ve struggled a lot with how to even use the program. I probably just need to immerse myself in some tutorials haha

Okay my bad, I think I just misunderstand BSD-3 and read somewhere that Proton is Valve’s proprietary software. In terms of open source software, the only licenses I’m really familiar with are GNU, Apache, and MIT. So I read one thing online saying Proton was proprietary and assumed BSD-3 was a proprietary license without looking into it further.

First off, thank you for having that flag in the classroom. It does more than you know for showing people that they can be accepted.

As for religion, I suppose my point and the biggest question really goes back to the big bang. Science can explain or at the very least approximate just about everything with the exception of the Big Bang. i.e., why does something exist instead of nothing? And I’ve heard the perspective — even from people who follow Abrahamic religions — that the only time God interfered was with the Big Bang, and that this was the actual “let there be light” moment. And that since then, we’ve been left to our own devices. What I find intriguing is that this interpretation does not really contradict anything in science. Personally, I see a striking symmetry between the Big Bang singularity (nigh instantaneous explosion of matter, energy, and information from seemingly nowhere) and the singularity at the center of black holes (nigh infinitely drawn out implosion where matter, energy, and information go seemingly nowhere), making in my mind a very strong case that the two are connected; that perhaps black holes create their own universes and we are but one of those universe offshoots. However, despite being succinct and elegant, this is also improvable and unfalsifiable. Faith in that this is how the universe began is, in my mind, no different than the faith that the Big Bang was started by none other than God.

(One could probably also make some argument about indeterminable quantum phenomena being of divine origin, but that goes even further outside the scope of the initial discussion hahaha).

Tbf if wine were released under regular GNU instead of LGPL, Valve wouldn’t have been able to make Proton proprietary, and so their contributions would also be open source. It is unfortunate that this is the situation, but by using the LGPL license WINE basically permitted this, no?

The thing is that is exactly what I mean by having a problem with people who force their religious values onto others, which is expressly not okay. But I know plenty of people, be they Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or whatever else who practice their faith in their own lives and do not disrupt the lives of others according to their beliefs. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of religious people I have met and know in real life are like this. Christian nationalists are different, they don’t respect the beliefs of others and want to force their faith onto other people. That’s where the line is. What I have a problem with is those who attack people who are not past that line, who are practicing their faith in their own lives without forcing anything onto others.

Really I prefer the word secular for myself, and for me that means I am comfortable within my own ignorance. Scientifically, we can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a god/gods, afterlife, etc. They are unfalsifiable, and therefore inproveable either way. So I just say I am comfortable not knowing. I neither assert the existence of god or the nonexistence of god, because I have no way to know either is true. That, and as I stated previously I just don’t like some of the connotations aetheism has gotten. Long ago I used to be a very loud, annoying, self-proclaimed atheist. But eventually I realized that just as there is no way to prove theism, there is no way to prove atheism. That, and I recognized that in my efforts to “spread” atheism and debunk religion I’d basically become what I was originally trying to “fight against,” essentially. Now I should be clear that I very much do still massively criticize those who try to exercise their religion onto others. I’m trans so I’m very used to it at this point. But I know plenty of religious people from all kinds of different religious backgrounds who practice in a way that is accepting of all people and does not impact those who do not share their faith, and I really see no problem with that.

This is such a huge problem in atheism communities, which is why I don’t spend any time in them despite being secular and non religious myself (yeah, I honestly don’t even like using the term “atheist” anymore). Religious or not, you shouldn’t be telling people what to believe or how to believe. That goes for hardline Christian nationalists just as much as it goes for hardline Atheists attacking anyone of faith. If it’s not hurting anyone, let people believe what they believe.

Legitimately back when I chose my CPU and I was debating between the Intel i9 14900K and the AMD 7950x3D, my final decision to go with AMD came down to this because at the time their specs seemed almost identical. And based on the more recent news about the 14 series, I absolutely made the right decision! 🇵🇸

I think they researched this and found that literally no creature completely rely on mosquitos, and that if they were wiped out the power vaccum would be replaced by other small flying insects that are within the diets of the creatures that would otherwise eat mosquitoes. So yeah, there really isn’t anything stopping us from wiping them out. I say do it, and just keep some in a lab just in case if fucks stuff up. Or maybe more reasonably just modify them so they can’t suck human blood or pierce human skin, which I’m pretty sure we’re also already capable of.

Matrix is promising, but I think it still could use a bit more polish. That said, I run a discord community, and soon one of these days I’m going to make a Matrix version of it and encourage users to try it out. Though very few probably will.

Yeah it’s legal in Colorado and I had some fun with it while I was there. But now in Texas even though I’m of legal age I cannot get access to weed legally (except for delta-8, but they’re trying to ban that too). And that also means the quality of weed is much, much worse. The smell of good quality legal weed from the boutique dispensaries in CO are very pleasant and calming to me, but I absolutely cannot stand the smell or taste of the “skunky” stuff, which in my experience pretty much all illegal weed tends to be. So I don’t have much interest in obtaining weed in Texas, especially because I don’t plan on staying here. My current plan is to get a degree and get out of the country, ideally move tosomewhere in Europe. Not sure exactly where yet, but I’ve narrowed down a list with the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Estonia, and Switzerland currently at the top (and yeah ik weed isn’t legal in all those places either but from what I’ve seen the punishments seem to be far less severe). So I’m not really chomping at the bit to get access to drugs right now, though it’d sure be nice if more things were legal here.

I feel like I remember hearing bad things about Peyote? Not sure if that’s what I’m thinking of. No idea how to grow spores (or really anything for that matter), I suppose I could learn at some point but for now it’s not something I have the time nor resources to really sustain.

Yeah the delivery part has always been what’s worried me the most. I don’t know anything about getting a secure mailbox because as I understand it, any delivery point that belongs to you can be traced back to your name. And the only options I have are my house and the UPS/USPS office for delivery.

Also yeah I’ll be voting for this election, hoping for a Harris win too and also for Allred to finally kick Cruz out of Texas!
