  • Yes I do

I’m boring, I like having meals that I don’t have to think about as options to lean on in the morning. Pb and toast is my default for a low effort, no-brain-power-required breakfast.

During my poverty days I ate that as my main source of calories in the day. At most I’d go through a 1lb jar in about 3 days, so like 2lbs a week back then.

These days I’m eating a plant based diet and have far more variety of foods I put in my face. I still go through a 1lb jar in ~1 week, unless I’m eating oatmeal or something else for breakfast for a stretch.

You know that ‘what’s one food you’d bring to a deserted island to eat forever’ question? My answer was always peanut butter. Have to rethink that now.

  • Detroit definitely is. Stuff is cheap there and things are turning around, just doesn’t have the momentum or wider recognition of any of this yet.

There’s a reason why Portland Oregon was so well known for being weird. Parts of the city were dingy for a long time but if you were glass half full about that it meant living there was affordable. All the poor creatives could live in a city open to change, not just the folks with high paying bullshit jobs that normally are the only ones who can afford to live close to work in the city.

If I had the money to invest in some real estate, I would have bought stuff in the Detroit area since it’s got all the same ingredients to be the next Portland

  • I can vouch for this.

I own REI’s sun hoodie that I use for the singular purpose of doing yard work and it’s one of the best 50 bucks I’ve spent because it makes being in the sun all day tolerable. I am fortunate to have a yard big enough to garden and my first summer here I thought just throwing on some regular clothes(long sleeves, jeans) would do but I was miserable because cotton absorbs sweat and doesn’t breathe worth shit in the heat. Then I got the hoodie and it was night and day of a difference.

It’s like when you go get a haircut and getting a bunch chopped off, that feeling of airy coolness right afterwards is probably the best way I can describe it. Made being outside in summer more comfortable and less of a slog.
