Despite all my rage I’m still a rat refreshing this page.

I use arch btw.

Credibly accused of being a fascist, liberal, commie, anarchist, child, boomer, pointlessly pedantic, a Russian psychological warfare operative, and db0’s sockpuppet.

Pronouns are she/her.

Vegan for the iron deficiency.

Do you or have you ever worked in science? I did for a bit and that was not my impression.

One cannot really argue that science as practiced is very effective at certain things but it is also extremely far from being objective in practice. Especially the further you stray from simple physical systems.

Also like I never saw someone formulate a hypothesis in any sort of formal sense haha.

  • Look I understand you’re trying to be positive but this doesn’t work. It’s not really viable for me to put more effort into explaining why each specific thing doesn’t work but take e.g. paper towels, well they rot. Unless you pack them up in an environment which they can’t rot in. Like a sealed mineshaft, which you could just pump co2 into. In either case you’re filling an empty coal mine with low density coal while using energy that could go to something with exponential payoffs like sustainable power infrastructure.

Protecting greenspace is good, reforestation is good and has all sorts of positive effects from stabilisation of local temperature to cleaning the air of pollutants. It is not however a solution to climate change. There is only one, and it is not burning fossil fuels. It is completely impractical to reverse the damage we have already done. We have added 0.02% of the atmosphere’s mass in co2, that is 1.E17 kg or a hundred million billion kilograms.

  • There is no magic to it. You can sharpen a knife with a brick if you’re careful.

The result and rate are determined by a few things:

    • Harder, more jagged grits will cut the steel of the knife away faster
    • The final edge can’t be (much) smoother than the grit used on it last.

It’s just like sanding wood or filing your nails. Usually we start course because it would take ages to wear in the approximate shape using finer materials, then we go progressively finer to smooth out the scratches left by the step prior.

Finer media is typically more expensive too, as fine stuff contaminating course stuff isn’t a huge issue but the opposite isn’t true. So we want to not blow our budget wearing away all nice stones.

Personally I would not try removing chips with anything finer than 1k, and depending on the size and the hardness of the steel might drop to 300 or so. you can, but it will take hours instead of minutes.

  • You mistake conflict for confusion.

If someone’s terminal values are opposed to yours you cannot convince them. Sometimes people change core opinions slowly, but almost always by interaction with people close to them (i.e. where they have conflicting drives to uphold or reject an opinion). Internet debate me bro shit is pointless and just poisons spaces.

  • It’s worth keeping in mind though, if you want to feed people: we can just do that, we have the food and we have the infrastructure. Every person going hungry in a city with edible food in bins, produce discarded for not looking right and so on is going hungry because of policy decisions.

It is cheaper, healthier, and more successful to just distribute the food we already grow, make and transport than trying to turn everything into an orchid.
