In math and (theoretical) physics alphabetical is the presumed norm.
In one of my old jobs we had a couple thousand line shell script called something like prod_corrections_adhoc.ksh. It was used to jam through emergency fixes between code releases.
It still has ‘adhoc corrections’ from 2006
Is there any material difference between Edge and Chrome? I’m forced to use either of them for work and as far as I can tell they perform the same
Generally agree, but damaging gas facilities can have undesirable consequences. An extreme methane leak is worse than combusting that gas
Prejudices against the LGBT community are already present in so many people that you don’t need brainwashing. Instead, this is about leveraging and amplifying the existing prejudice for political purposes.
Leaving academia was definitely one of the best choices I ever made for my (physical, mental and financial) health.
I don’t regret doing my PhD, but I definitely spent two years too many on the postdoc treadmill.
As we’ve recently learned it isn’t just about oil. It’s about maritime trade more broadly. One of the explicit purposes of the US Navy is to defend maritime trade. The Suez canal and the Persian Gulf are two of the most important maritime trade routes.
After the elections in 2024 the picture could be different. Putin’s long term strategy has been to weaken NATO by supporting NATO-skeptic parties. Depending on election outcomes there is a real possibility that key members fail to adhere to their Article 5 obligations
In a way these observations cut more deeply into the foundations of cosmology than dark matter. Indeed, I’d argue that dark matter challenges the standard model of particle physics more than the standard model of cosmology.
These discoveries of large scale structures challenge the assumptions that the universe is homogenous at a large enough scale. This assumption, along with isotropy, are what lead to the FLRW family of metrics describing spacetime at cosmological scales. Dark matter and dark energy only come in to the picture once you try to fit the parameters of the FLRW metrics to our observed universe.
If even a small fraction of Russia’s nuclear arsenal is functional then they are still incredibly dangerous
They were enemy combatants because they were within bombing radius of an enemy combatant. That was the American logic in Iraq and Afghanistan in order to print more humane-looking civilian casualty numbers
It’s shameful that Trudeau himself started the unwinding of the carbon tax. This home heating exclusion for Atlantic Canada was the beginning of the end.
Oh, of course. He’s fine with child abuse as long as it is consensual.
Two words: pube loofah. The mons pubis is a great place to lather up. Then I just scoop up soap with my bare hands and bring it where it needs to be.
This post confuses me. Why would code be simpler than the math notation? Both involve symbolic abstraction of basically the same complexity
The language physicists use in describing this is the following: “The electron can turn into a virtual photon and a virtual electron, which then turn back into a real electron.” And they draw a Feynman diagram that looks like Figure 4. But what they really mean is what I have just described in the previous paragraph. The Feynman diagram is actually a calculational tool, not a picture of the physical phenomenon; if you want to calculate how big this effect is, you take that diagram , translate it into a mathematical expression according to Feynman’s rules, set to work for a little while with some paper and pen, and soon obtain the answer.
The emphasized part of this paragraph is such a good point. The way we talk about Feynman diagrams makes many students and working physicists think of them as representations of the actual physical process that is happening in QFT. In reality they are just graphical tools for representing the calculation of a power series (either formal or asymptotic).
Given your usage why would you even compare the cost of your car to the cost of a monthly pass? Most bus passes are calibrated to make sense for people using transit as their primary means of transportation. You use your car much less than that, so to make an apples-to-apples comparison you’d need to compare your car costs against the same number of trips on transit.
I’m surprised that your insurance and gas cost is so low. A TTC monthly pass is only $156. You must have very cheap insurance and use only a small amount of fuel.
The initial push into the land is often funded by their agricultural ministry. Settlers force Palestinians off their land (with IDF support) to put their own sheep/goats out to pasture. The WSJ had a video earlier this year where they interview settlers and they show the reporters explicitly how they are receiving funding from the ministry. The rest of the funds come from private American donors who enthusiastically support the illegal annexations.
