Yeah, all the other “countries” use the term “state” when referring to them in English. The US is the only place that has a ‘federal’ level ‘above’ states. If you’re on Lemmy, you should have some idea of what federation means. This should all put in perspective what the original idea of the United States was and how much control each level was intended to have.
This also makes it all the more hilarious and stupid how Texans wanna call themselves a country. They don’t even know the words they’re using.
In @[email protected]’s defence, some of those don’t call their federal subjects “states”. Very many do, enough that the comment was ignorant in the extreme, but Canada is a good example of one that doesn’t.
