I’m doing well. I have a good life. But holy shit, I’m so tired. The world is so terrible and I’m just fed up. I wish I could just check out and take a break, but it keeps going. Cheers.

This post is certainly outside of the norm of shower thoughts. I think in general people want posts that score a little higher on the scale of funny and interesting. Taking the sidebar strictly:

    • Does this thought pop into people’s heads? yeah, probably
    • Is it lighthearted? Not really, but its friendly.
    • Is it clever? No
    • Is it true? Yes

“I have a good life[…] The world is so terrible” screams “I engage with social media toxic to my mental health” to me but my context of your existence is 3 sentences so…

Take that as advice or criticism but the world has never been perfect and certainly will never be as close to perfect as the funnel of negativity online echo chambers and recommendation algos can be

If you have a good life, and you’re fine with loads of your neighbors not having a good life, you’re a psychopath.

I promise you, if you’re American, there are people struggling to find their next meal less than a fifteen minute drive from your door.

The only social media that I use is Lemmy. True that I’ve self-selected news and politics (among other topics), so I see a lot of Trump2 bullshit. I no longer read the articles to protect my mental health. I read the headline and maybe skim the beginning before I move on.

Unfortunately, sometimes that’s all it takes, especially when not diluted by opposing viewpoints, but let me–without any knowledge of the specific contents–take a crack at countering the negativity bias of those narratives:

        • 30% of the global energy generation comes from renewable now

        • Social media is bringing the demand for better public transit to a fever pitch

        • Trump 1 has a lot of news sources careful to investigate claims before platforming whatever a US president says because “who would abuse that power?” (anecdotal and European bias here but many of these outlets are accessible online for free)

        • America may finally be joining the modern world with HSR between Canada HSR, that California project and the one connecting LA to Vegas (some rumblings about importing the Shinkansen to connect the Texas Triangle, too)

If these sound relevant to what you’re used to seeing, I’d recommend asking yourself if any of the communities can acknowledge improvement, in other words: if you’re following a (hypothetical) community called “Don’t Kick Puppies” because who wouldn’t support that cause, well not only did you just sign up for a stream of puppy kicking content but one moderated by somebody invested in convincing people the issue is a pressing concern regardless of what the data indicate

My dream is to one day become that wise old person you climb a mountain top to visit and to have them bestow wisdom upon. You’re not alone, friend. But, taking breaks, even if it’s as short as watching a funny movie, reading a good book, or sitting in a park with some coffee or tea. Pouring out a cup as it’s being filled , even it’s a little bit, will stop it from overflowing.

This belongs in [email protected] or !shootingthebreeze or whatever, not here. Like 1 in 3 other posts, yes. Literally breaks rules #1 and #2.

The “mods” in this community are asleep at the wheel. Might as well not have them.

If we do things as you seem to want, then there’s no point even having separate communities. Let’s just have one big bin and every day we can throw 10,000 conversation into it like junk.

The rules are there for a reason.

The rules are there so people don’t wander into a science community and proselytise their religion, harassing the people with comments that God created the universe and dinosaurs are false. Not so someone doesn’t post in shower thoughts with a thought that very likely actually did occur while showering.

The world’s a tough place, Karen. If you want to redefine what a shower thought is, you’re free to create your own community. I see nothing in this post that contravenes “thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming”, and while I see you screeching that rule 2 is broken, consider that the title is, in fact, a complete thought. The text can be seen as followup or self-examination - do you need an explanation of what that is?

You’re right! We should lock down every community to very strict rules in order to sanitize it and know exactly what we’re getting! I want to come here for variations on “if bread bowl for soup, why not cabbage bowl for salad?” And an echo chamber with no new ideas instead of one-off non-repeat-offenders dropping the occasional off topic rule bending whatevers. Maybe we should rename this place too. Maybe read-it or something.

On the other hand, let’s fill Technology with talk about bicycle repair and dishwasher purchases because they are technology and Food with motivational quotes from LinkedIn because they are food for thoughts and Movies with discussions about American politics because 👏🏻 everything 👏🏻 is 👏🏻 political ✊🏻 and then we can fill everything else with compilations of America’s Funniest Home Videos and barely related bot generated AI slop because what kind of nazi fascist conformist rights do mods have to try to keep some order and its not a phase and you’re not my real dad anyway.

I hear you. I do. I was taking a comically hard opposing stance to that comment but I’m really advocating for a little more tolerance for one-off posts. People who really gatekeep turn people off from posting (and we kind of suffer from a deficit of posts here on lemmy).

I don’t know why you all are so afraid to rectify a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes. It’s natural. It’s also good to do something about it and learn from the experience.

How does it break rule 1? Are you watching OP and reading their mind to know for sure they didn’t think of this while in the shower?

Also this community is actively asking for more mods. They’re saying they’re not active enough to do it all.

A shower thought is not just any thought in a shower or a thought about showers. It’s something slightly random and absurd and most often humorous to some degree. Quite often an observation of some sort. Something that typically happens when you zone out while having a shower.

Check the community description, it has a decent definition of “showerthought”. With examples for clarity.

Also this community is actively asking for more mods.

        So that explains it.

Nah, I’ve had many depressive bouts (bi-polar). This is more like I’ve given up on the world post-Trump-2. I’m checked out to avoid the depression. One could argue this is still pre-depression, and I wouldn’t argue back. But it’s not yet depression. I note that you said creeping… I’m distinguishing between them.

A couple of years back I fell asleep at like 8 PM and slept through to 6:30 AM. Then I fell back asleep around 8 or 9 and slept until noon. When I woke up I didn’t feel tired at all. This had been the first time I felt like that in I don’t know how long

I slept nearly 12 hours last night, woke up, had a panic attack, then took a nap for four hours.

Woke up, put on The Elephant Graveyard Radio Hour, danced and cleaned my house happy.

It’s also been a long time since a nap like that worked so well. Sometimes ya just need to sleep.
