There’s an option in the settings for that, and multiple UIs available on the Play Store. Need more traditional file management? Apps can request storage access, and you have what is essentially a user home directory by default. Want to change your theme? You can.
I’ve very rarely come across any reason to root my Android device, and as you said, it’s usually just not worth the hassle.
