I missed out every Pokémon game after Platinum since buying a new system was just too much for me to afford as a child. I gather from your username that you’re a fan of the franchise - do you have any suggestions for how to get back into the series from where I left off most cost-effectively while retaining the essential functions? Obviously, some online servers and events for certain gameplay elements are no longer available for cartridge gameplay.
Pokemon is one game where you won’t miss much through emulation. They did occasionally play around with hardware gimmicks for a few bonus minigames or whatever, but all of that stuff is skippable and unimportant to the core gameplay.
You should checkout retro achievements. I just finished mastering Pokemon Red & Blue and even finished a professor oak challenge run. Completely free and you can even use retro arch (the front end for a ton of different emulators) on your mobile! Feel free to pm me with any questions.
Many of the best DS games are built around the hardware in ways that make it difficult to get the full experience from trying to emulate.

Everytime it was a “Wow. That’s neat!”
Proceeds to never do it again

There’s hardware made to emulate that too, should you go that route. Not free though.
