It was suggested that I post this idea to the community proper. So I’m just copying and pasting the comment that I made, edited to make it clear which post I’m referencing (which is the next most recent post here anyway). I hope I got the link right in order to work with all of this federation mumbo jumbo.

I’m too new to be making these kinds of suggestions and I’m far from the moderator type myself but multiple times throughout this week, I’ve been thinking that it would be pretty cool if there was an AskBlåhaj. Or even just general Ask Lemmy based here, that could be asking for unwanted attention from shitty people on other instances though.

Not even 24 hours after seeing this post, I’ve seen someone else getting the snark and a non answer for a simple question. And also a Blåhaj user.

As much of a public bathroom as it could be, AskReddit was pretty fun for ‘silly’ questions and general chatting. And a nice place for new users to hang around and gain karma and confidence. But with the gatekeeper neckbeardy types around, maybe what it needs on Lemmy is to be in an instance with rules that promote friendliness and good vibes.

Just an idea to throw out there anyway.

You (or someone else) is welcome to create a community like that! I won’t, because I’m cautious about taking too much on, and I don’t want to directly be responsible for another community on top of admin stuff.

Yes, as a noob here, I’m realising that another thing to consider is that certain instances might just not have the capacity or work force to take everything on at once. So that’s quite an understandable position to take. It would be nice to see though, if someone felt so inclined.

Drag has submitted an application for a Blahaj account to create another community. When the application is approved, drag will create and moderate AskBlahaj too.

Very cool! I really hope it takes off because it’s just what this place needs. I’m sure it’s gonna be hard work for drag though.

there is already an ask transgender community, looking at the mod log it dosent seem to be rampant with trolls, but also it isnt very active, maybe an indicator for how such a community might do overall?

I’m aware of ask transgender, but what I had in mind would be a lot more general purpose, like Ask Reddit / Lemmy. Just in a better environment.

Reading that previous post made me remember how intimidating it could be joining forum sites and trying to fit in and find your way at first. I’m pretty sure I was intimidated by Reddit at first way back in the day too.

And Ask Reddit style place is perfect to break the ice in that case. I get the impression that a couple of people that are new(ish) to here are trying that and getting edgy and (maybe unintentionally) abrasive responses. And getting scared off. Which made me think of this instance having a section for noobs or people who just like to ask random questions and chat.

Either way, I’m no moderator as I said. So it’s just a suggestion anyway, for anyone that might think it’s a good idea.

oh i think its a great idea, im sure the community would benefit from a place where we can have civil discussions with interested partys. i wasnt trying to demerit it or say it would be dead anyways so why try. just trying to provide a real world counterpart to compare to.
