I’ve been on lemmy for over a year now, and I just realized I used to read all those HackerNews articles + their comments, I haven’t done that in probably 6 months because the discussion here has gotten much better. What’s changed for you with Lemmy over the last year?

Yeah pretty much. It discusses news articles about violent events where clearly it’s immigration organized gangs being responsible.

I think it’s fine to discuss that and be aware of it.

I think it’s wrong to not discuss it because some people think it’s racism.

As a fellow Swedish immigrant, I’m looking forward to my invite from foxkurdish to make some snabba cash.

The recoil to online immigration discussion is less about the connection between immigration opposition and racism, and more about how blaming immigrants for crime is a common misconception that is stupidly popular in Sweden and Trumpist circles. The US has blamed its crime problems on Jews, Italians, Irish, Chinese, etc over the decades, but it’s not like Jews, Atheists, and Catholics are “incompatible with American culture” like Swedish politicians like to parrot these days. So people on Lemmy think those people are talking bullshit and downvote them.

r/sweden got REALLY focused on immigration after people started leaving for lemmy, so that tells you something about the kinds of politics each site attracts.

My fun fact about Swedish immigration policy is that during WW2, The S government was so worried about increased crime and the economic impact of Jewish refugees that they convinced Germany to mark all Jews’ passports with a J so that they could ban all Jewish immigration into Sweden.

        https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-passen

        https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sveriges_invandringspolitik

        https://www.riksdagen.se/sv/dokument-och-lagar/dokument/proposition/kungl.-majts-proposition-nr-198_do30198/html/

Also about the racism thing, not all anti-immigration politics supporters are racists, but people online make assumptions. Just like how people assume criminals are immigrants, people assume immigration opposers are racists. People are suspicious of simplistic, radical politics like that.

Why shouldn’t Swedish people blame immigrant gangs for doing crime when it’s explicitly said the crimes are by immigrant gangs?

That is not racism, and I don’t understand that take on it. If I went to Spain as a swede, and I joined gangs to make quick cash, and I committed crimes… And then the newspapers write about it… I’m supposed to feel they are racist towards me? That’s madness. I’m guilty of the crimes!

Same thing in Sweden. Immigrant gangs are behind organized crimes. We all want that to stop, and that you should include yourself living here. It’s not racism.
