63·4 months agothey have not blocked it and they probably won’t block it bc it involves signing in with your twitter and since it’s just an android app it’s not gonna get as big as nitter, I don’t think it’s really helpful to tell people to “just accept it” as an individual you’re not gonna be able to successfully lobby everything you follow to change to bluesky (which I think you can get rss feeds from) or masto (which you can get rss feeds from), like for example your city’s local government/services only posts on facebook and twitter, no rss, this is still useful for things like that
1·4 months agoThe obvious difference being my/others mastodon posts aren’t showing up on wordpress and being monetized. One way federation to masto doesn’t matter bc it isn’t data farming / putting ads on masto content.
Yeah I’ve seen almost no movement against Tumblr while everyone got very riled up about Meta federation ie fedipact, probably a blindspot bc users have positive associations with tumblr, but it’s still an ad/data company all the same.

5·5 months agoI’m mostly hoping that the few accounts I follow that are basically only on twitter and facebook eventually open an account on bluesky or even better mastodon so I can follow them with RSS, but that will probably take a while so I see your point.
Aren’t they all gonna be defunct by the end of the month with Elon’s changes to guest accounts or did I not understand the earlier posts about that correctly.
That’s pretty unlikely unless he’s doing a big pivot in his branding, he quite literally has said the US should team up with Russia to fight/oppose China.
Carlson’s dissenting line on Ukraine policy has to be understood in light of his obsession with fighting China. As he outlined back in 2019, his dim view of Washington’s Russia strategy came from the fact that he viewed China, not Russia, as “our main enemy,” and that “the United States ought to be in a relationship with Russia aligned against China to the extent that we can.”
He reiterated this point three years later: because “China is the preeminent threat to the United States,” and because it’s impossible “to engage meaningfully simultaneously in Europe and in Asia,” the US focus on Ukraine only “detracts from our attention to China,” while at the same time pushing Moscow “into an alliance of convenience of necessity with the Chinese government.”
3·6 months agoIf you’re asking this you should probably use one to be more safe if you’re exposing stuff to the web, there are other ways of doing it including just VPNing into your home network or using a VPS or cloudflare tunnels, but using a reverse proxy manager in combo with cloudflare DNS is a good place to start and is probably good enough if you use good enough security with it: long unique passwords, two factor, security keys, etc.
3·6 months agoI wouldn’t count out the pressure of dual citizens and interest groups too, it’s not like the US is the only place that has an Israel lobby, Russian is spoken by around 1/5 people in Israel, although some of that 20% would also account for Russian speakers originally from other parts of the USSR, that is still a very substantial connection.
Doing something completely and plainly undemocratic to preserve “democracy” certified classic. I’m sure there’s still some way to get out still, but, NATO forever no looking back I guess. The completely real and not totally contrived “north atlantic community” me and my closest friends across half the world.
There is no issue with the source other than it not being the new york times or the washington post or the bbc, every source that is not one of those is unreliable state affiliated media propaganda and is scary and bad because it makes me confused because it says things that make me have to think critically and actually engage with what I’m reading instead of just mindlessly guzzling down the western liberal/center consensus of a handful of “papers of record”.
And then you respond with a different source to which the criticism does not apply

If you find the article so objectionable read this “article” in Haaretz instead. Let me know if you have any problem with their wording, I’m guessing for some reason you won’t!

I read it more as Biden putting pressure because people are finally telling him this war is killing him in the polls which I think he cares about quite a lot, whether or not it’s an empty threat, who knows, we’ll see in a few weeks.

Such a weird justification for taking it down, saying it was being shared without context when you can just edit your own article and add whatever context you think is necessary
I do wonder if this is specifically what got them, would probably take a lemmy lawyer to unpack it, but I would have to imagine if they didn’t have a patreon and basically a company, it would have been much harder for Nintendo to do anything about them. And I would also imagine in retrospect whatever money they got was not worth it when it ends like this.
I always assume when people operate services like this, that they host it in a country like Russia that’s less likely to care about takedowns by western corpos and done anonymously as possible. Even though it’s just an emulator, you would think they wouldn’t be so brazen as to have a patreon which I’m sure requires someone’s identity/billing info. They probably still could have been tracked down if they took crypto donations or something like that, but you would think that would be the first choice over putting a giant target on their backs. Patreon is obviously just gonna hand over whatever info they are asked to give when served a warrent, and so is Discord for that matter if they had any personal info on there too.
