This should be non controversial. RH is complying with it’s obligations to those that it distributes to. Alma, Rocky, Oracle and Amazon have all built RHEL competitors based on RHEL. Red Hat shouldn’t be obligated to do the work for it’s commercial competitors. And let’s not delude ourselves that RH and IBM are not major contributors to the Linux eco-system upstream. The issue here is that competitors want to have patch for patch RHEL and the back ports from upstream for free.

I am a waiting for the slander and libel suits to land. Seems like RIF and Apollo devs have a good case. It would be epic if Reddit had to pay them each $20m.

Ironically, if Reddit has been up front and said they were killing third party apps, and kept their mouths shut they would have faired better. For a stupid play like this, speaking only makes it worse. This is going to be taught in business school on how to kill a business.

I think point two is interesting, but only if the communities choose too. One of the interesting promises of federation is that you can have competing communities with different interests. I can completely see commerical interests hosting a server (e.g the NBA or NFL) that has strong brand identity as a place to interact with stars, and then the un-branded fan sites. IMO, the competition is what makes the Fediverse interesting, and seeing that play out is fascinating.

The venture capitalists can if they have a majority of the shares. Since Reddit raised $1.3B, I wouldn’t be surprised if the VCs own more than 50%. The only exception would be if those shares by the VCs are non voting, but I can’t see a VC buying non voting shares.

I think this is where the Fediverse can shine. If a Corp wants to join and host their own stuff, they can, and it will be really clear. Decentralization means that instead of a single broker of the information we can have a range from altruistic to straight up monetization exist side by side. But why some Corp would pay for a subreddit is crazy…I mean, what is the value prop? Companies would have to pay for the subreddit and then moderate it too?

That article sums up my view pretty well. Huffman has alienated his users, advertisers and potential employees. Reddit is changing the symbiotic relationship between itself and the third party ecosystem that made Reddit was it is today, and has gone full parasite.

Yeah, try living anywhere in the US outside NY, Boston, and a few other places. Most city planning outside Europe and Asia assumes a car. Unlike parts of Copenhagen, where you can literally get everything you need, unless you live in NYC (and cities like it) you have to have a car.

So yes, I would love to be able to go anywhere via public transit and I would love to not own a cat. But for most of the world it just is a pipe dream.

IMO, we need to focus on harm reduction. Cars are bad. But EVs are slightly better when public transit is non-existent. Taking an all or non position is one from privilege or life style or environment. Cars are a tool. And while expensive and an obsene waste of resources, the infrastructure and housing to have the mass of society in cities does not exist. If I lived where cars could be an option I would totally not have one.

My point is that EVS are better than ICE. They certainly have their environmental problems but on whole, they are better and safer than ICE. An all or non position is nonsense and denies the reality we live in.

Sigh…I own an EV and I will tell you that my reasons for buying it are less environmental and more practical. Not having to go to a gas station (charge at home) or how I literally have way more power than I need or that it’s just fun to drive. You can shit on EVs, but in all reality they are a superior car if you don’t get hung up on the fuel. I want to be better about the environment, but honestly, my EV is hands down my all time favorite car (and it’s not a Tesla). So before you mock em, go test drive a few.

I think the crux of what you are saying is that decentralized is a means to create a community. Most of us here want the idea to succeed and are putting in the effort, much like early crypto. Where both Reddit and Crypto failed is when commercial interest took hold. And to your point as long as Lemmy remains commerically disinterting, it will be a true community.

But, because of the decentralized nature, even if a commercial interest takes hold, it will be on individual servers. I can see the NBA or the Olympics or niche topics having their own servers – and I would argue that is a good thing for those interested to host. The value is that you can have both the astro turfed along side the organic with competing interests in the “why.”

Being out for a few days or a week could be enough for a disapera to form and go elsewhere. For me, I am finding Lemmy and Mastodon are more usable. If even 1% go to Lemmy or Masatadon, a critical mass might be established and people will stay.

I stopped engaging with Reddit when meme-ification happened.Wheb it became all about the lolz abd short pithy responses, I started using it to find more interesting articles. Gone are the days wheb the average Redditor would read and make thoughtful contributions.
