Migrating soon to @[email protected] due to disagreements with lemmy.world’s implementation of Rule 1.
I don’t have an answer to your actual question other than self-hosting. But, I doubt you’d ever get a “firehose of trash” on your main feed. Mainly because the trashy instances aren’t that populous, so I doubt their posts would be active or hot enough to float to the top. But I could be wrong.
You could always go directly to the instance you want to read and lurk. Unless you make an account you won’t be able to comment, but you’ll be able to get your firehose of trash
Edit: Just be mindful of how much you consume, you’d be surprised how easily hate can invade your mind. To this day I still have to self-censor every now and then thanks to the hateful rhetoric I grew up around, even though I’m long past it
But everyone was so much thinner back then. The average person was so much hotter.
Because they inherited an economy with actual food and replaced it with “food” filled with industrial inventions like corn syrup
Economic liberalism is the economic theory of both American parties. Idk how it came to be applied to only the democratic party but that’s incorrect. OP is presumably critiquing economic liberalism from a leftist perspective, of which the Democrats are not
NOOOO I CAN ONLY TAKE ONE AT A TIME
The curious ones will eventually settle down and even redistribute into smaller instances
Absolutely. I migrated from lemmy.ml when that was having too many sign-ups, and I’m not opposed to migrating from lemmy.world to help with their load. I’m sure I’m one of many
That’s fine but it needs to happen in the appropriate place. c/reddit is the best place for it. c/lemmy.world is for discussing this instance
Does that work across federation? I can’t get mine to work
My phone tries to open it with email lol
r/worldbuilding still hasn’t opened back up so worldbuilding?
I mean regardless of the devs’ opinions they are forwarding the democratization of information by working on this project
Hell yeah, bröthur, congratulations on the start of your journey
Sometimes it helps me to remember that many people are working toward different goals. You were likely looking for community. They were likely looking for content to consume. They are incapable of understanding your passion because they never saw reddit as something important - a community. Instead, to them it was a place for cheap and easy entertainment.
Thus, in their minds they’re justified - why would anyone be so passionate about their source of entertainment being cut off? But of course they didn’t see what you saw. Of course you would be passionate - your community was being monetized.
I think a lot of people here on the fediverse are a little more like-minded to you. We see the internet as a service and opportunity to connect. It’s not television or radio. It’s a network of voices, and hopefully democratic.
I hope this helps :)
I agree with this. Not only are most redditors and internet goers just lurking for entertainment - the fediverse is also currently a clunker of a project being held together with duct tape and WD40. Until it matures (which I believe it will) it just won’t be attractive to most casual users.
Currently, we (people in the fediverse) are probably mostly people driven by curiosity or passion. We really shouldn’t expect the masses to follow quite yet
I want you to know that you’re not alone in seeking a more thoughtful and accepting community :)
We are, we moved to lemmy. In the short term the majority absolutely will stay at reddit and nothing will change. There’s no use in despairing over that or getting angry. We will plod on, stone-faced and indifferent to those who don’t care. They don’t affect us. We will grow as we grow, and getting emotional will not change any of that
This is the curve of history. Movements arise, they grow, and once they hit a mass large enough to capitalize off of they’re co-opted. This has always been the way. It will continue for a long time. We keep our chins up and our eyes forward. Yes, it’s frustrating. But we keep on keeping on. We do the right thing because it’s the right thing - not because it’s easy.
Have heart, lemming
Some communities aren’t updating on lemmy.world
Specifically, I moderate /c/[email protected] and I noticed that lemmy.world’s side is not updating. No new posts from lemmy.ml’s side, and their side shows 300+ subscribers while mine shows ~80
Idk that I’d call them more principled so much as differently principled. Like yeah, they do make good products and are banking on a good reputation with their customers. But they’ve also founded their business on exclusivity, planned obsolescence, and child labor
Yes! I struggle to motivate myself to stick with hobbies. I love photography, making art, writing - but often the motivation is just lacking. But cooking? I’m biologically motivated to cook (most days) so it’s easy to keep up with. All I have to do is save recipes and plan ahead just a little
