After the dodge charger electric fake V8 engine noise, Ferrari is following
I guess that people who buy these cars have a need for emotive support and very poor self esteem, and need to bother everyone else when there is absolutely no need for it.
Fuck cars
My favourite thing about electric cars is the sound of the motor whirling at high speeds and how quiet they are ordinarily. I have no idea why old people insist on the noise pollution of yesteryear.
Not just old people, so much young people who have an pos car and believe themselves racing drivers. With their fake spoilers, body kits and of course “sporty” exhaust. Just making noise to make noise, to make themselves feel better. I’m just trying to sleep as they “race” from speedbump to speedbump in a 15 mph zone. They need to basically stop to not scrape across the bottom at a speedbump, so they rev up hard in between.
Fucking idiots, I don’t know why people are so selfish these days.
Car noise is generally from tyre, not the engine. Generally. If you ever have a chance to stand beside a highway where car usually zoom by at 100kmph++, you will hear mostly the tyre sound and rarely the sound of engine nor the exhaust. ICE car these day are so well-tuned to make less noise from the engine and exhaust, but they can’t control what tyre the owner put on.
The only thing electric car solved is eliminating tailpipe pollution, the rest is still there. There’s also danger on how quiet the car are in low speed, so whirling sound might needed to prevent pedestrians harm. It’s better than nothing though, but it’s still way worst than public transport or bicycle.
Thats true when the cars are driving fast, but don’t forget that much of the time cars are driving slower through the city than most bicyclists.
Yup, the “roar that matters” is the one people can hear when you quickly approach the speed limit in the city.
I think it depend on which part of the world that city is in, car is usually driving 60 - 80kmph in the city where i from. Tyre noise is only negligible when it’s below something like 40kmph, and most city in the world is badly designed. It’s only in the residential area where speed limit is under 40kmph and with speed bump to slow down car.
Now I’m curious, in which parts of the world is the usual city speed 60-80 kmph? In the united states, most citys have a speed limit of 25 mph (40kmph), while in Europe, 50 kmph seems more common.
Malaysia. In the capital, raised highway cut through city, street with 60kmph limit is common throughout the city(national speed limit), stroad like these is common sight in the heart of the capital, road like these goes right beside a residential area(which technically have 30kmph limit, but the noise come from that road instead of the street in front of the house).
And that’s for capital city/state with good-ish public transport. The rest of the country is car/motorcycle dependent, meaning terrible bus schedule, no train/tram, and little to no bicycle path, it’s worst. Not to mention a lot of motorcyclist here is a different breed of asshole, they even have a subculture for themselves, called Mat Rempit.
Sounds like you dont live in a city lol
I live in a city. Opposite a school in fact. I can hear the ICE cars every day. I can’t say the same about electric cars. I’m sure there’s some equivalency somewhere, but it doesn’t apply to my real world experience.
The same with riding in ICE versus electric taxis. My mum has a broken back and can feel the engine vibrations and the noise is annoying. That doesn’t apply to electric taxis.
Yeah, I don’t think it’s completely quiet and it also adds up.
I love the combination of auto stop/start, hybrids and electrics in the city. No idea what the real environmental impact is but the silence at traffic lights is amazing.
I do agree on the riding, while there’s load of insulation to prevent noise and vibration, it all has to depend on the owner to take care of it, and it’s inevitable some car is noisier and shakier inside than the other, especially at higher speed.
I live in an urban area, there are countless morons in motorbikes or cars that are loud as hell and makes my windows tremble. So I’d say the engine and exhaust pipes are the culripts at least in cities.
The motorbikes and scooters are the worst for noise pollution. I can’t wait until they’re all replaced by electric versions.
Yes, the random dude at 2.30am passing by and waking up the entire street.
I work at a place facing a 4 lane road with 80kmph speed limit, while moped and asshole with modded tailpipe did what they do best by generating a tons of noise, all car that zip by with speed passed 60kmph generating tyre noise greater than what their engine and tailpipe do.
Maybe this isn’t an issue for city with 40kmph speed limit road, but there’s more badly designed car centric city than those good one.
I’d wager people care more about noise at low speed than they do about high as the majority of people live and work near slow speed roads now high…
Good for them, i’m just stating fact, as OP said it’s just motor whirling at high speed so i’m talking about that specific case.
I always found the whirling noise surprising. One can clearly hear the wheels which are as loud as the speaker.
And if you’re deaf neither will help.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while. Car go vrrrmmm vrrrmmm like it’s marketed to actual children.
tbf most of the people buying these are basically children.
yeah but imagine if you could swap the sound set to someone mumbling brummbrummbrummbrbrbrbr
I understand why electric vehicles should emit a noise at low speeds for blind people. However do not allow those fucking fart can noises.
This is sound played through the speakers into the car, most likely, not sound played outside of it for the blind
I’m all for this as long as we get custom novelty engine sounds. I would drive a Ferrari that makes cheesy engine sounds like a person impersonating a car with their voice. Floor the accellerator and it literally screams “Vroooom!”. Coast around a parking lot while your car gently scats.
Imagine starting your car and it making the Macintosh boot sound, then tearing down the interstate with dialup modem sounds blasting.
/s (I don’t even own a car)
This would be very funny but for the sake of clarity/safety I hope they get regulated to a single standard sound. As a pedestrian I’d like to know immediately whether it’s a car
i fucking hate the sound of loud motors
My masculinity is so fragile I must have vroom vroom to let the world know how “manly” I am.
I really must you guys.
You guys, I’m sooper MANLY!Remember when Ferrari was a technological pioneer rather than gimmick manufacturer.
If you want to know what an electric sports car should be like look at Rimac.
Lucid out of Arizona also
I’ll never forgive Rimac for almost killing my Hamster.
And there you have it! The absolutely most pathetic kind of fragile masculinity. When adults are stuck in the “car makes wroom wroon”-age and are dumb enough to believe others would admire them for that behavior.
I don’t need it or support it personally, especially the really loud noises. But I don’t think it’s as simple as you say.
A car without noise is like the acceleration version of a touchscreen. Perfectly fine and serviceable and probably works for most people. But I’m not going to automatically look down on people who prefer buttons. Having that extra feedback to tell you you’ve pushed the button, or how hard you’ve hit the accelerator, can be useful.
That said, I’d much prefer they stick to internal speakers for such feedback. It can be useful letting others know that you’re about to haul ass, but the people who do it outside my neighborhood at 1 AM in the most obnoxious way possible can right to hell.
Ferrari just needs to use synchronous reluctance motors in the cars. Will be screaming louder than anything on the road.
Having EVs make sound for safety makes sense, but can they sound like mini-trains?
“will literally roar”
It better have an actual lion roar coming out the tailpi- er speaker or I’m suing
Literally?
The man said literally
I mean its important that they make some small noises so that cyclists can hear them approaching, but we need laws that minimize those noises so they dont become noise pollution
It is seriously ridiculous that someone can own a car that would require hearing protection outside of it and just drive it down the street. I live next to a busy heavy rail line and loud cars are far more disruptive than any passing train. The same asshole drives the same street at the same time every night at 2 am and nearly the whole city can hear their exhuast (from the aounds of it they are driving recklessly) yet the cops can’t seem to stop them. Same with empty parking lots having people rev to their red line and doing donuts. Its total fucking anarchy.
You had.me until anarchy. I think anarchists would get together and stop such behavior.
How do you propose we solve excessive exhaust noise without regulation?
Anarchists are very good at blocking roads and dealing with people in the community who violate their agreed-upon rules.
This is pretty dumb because it’s an asswipe car to begin with but I already had the idea of EVs including an engine sound synth so make car noises so people can tell a car is coming. EVs are freakishly quiet.
Never forget that noise pollution is one of the multitudinous problems with cars and it’s a car brained idea that cars should be forced to pollute more then they already do.
Should bikes also be forced to have sound emitting from them?
Obviously I mean within reason. When I have to drive I always feel embarrassed when I gear down and the engine revs up loudly.
Bikes are also kinda forced to have sounds in the context of biking on the streets at least. I had to get a loud ass air horn reserved for honking at drivers. Then I have two bells of differing kindness levels for pedestrians and other cyclists.
I’m pretty sure that’s already a thing, at least I know GM does it and I’m fairly certain it’s for regulatory reasons.
Although imo cars are pretty loud on their own just from tires gripping pavement and air displacement.
I thought my fat bike studded snow tires were loud as fuck but people still meander into the bike lane while engrossed in the phone screen and are somehow startled when I ring the gentle bell even. I’ve noticed though that people with baby strollers do generally seem more attentive and make eye contact.
All EVs make some kind of ufo noise at low speeds as it’s required by law. So I guess it makes sense to choose a “cool” sound.
I don’t watch TV. Are there ads for downloading your car’s ringtone?
For safety reasons, they ought to make some noise.
I propose the standard should be a little bidi-bidi-bidi-bidi sound like on The Jetsons.
Absolutely not. Cars make noise because physics says they have to. If somehow cars can be 100% silent in all ways, there is no reason at all that should be making noise (other then the horn to alert people in case they need to alert people).
Noise pollution is absolutely part of the problem with cars, so the last thing we need if we want in a society that continues to allow cars, is archaic rules where cars have to create more pollution.
Ambient noise is alerting people to their presence, to help them not get run over. You don’t have to hear it screaming BIDI BIDI BIDI BIDI down the block when some asshole revs the… nothing.
alerting people to their presence
Is many legal systems the driver is responsible for not running people over.
Can they legally un-break a pedestrians bones?
Does finding the guilty party solve the issue?
What if they play that techno chase song from Super Troopers? Bee dun bang do da bang whi whoa bi bodiddi bo.
🤣🤣🤣
So I hate loud cars (well, all cars) and this idea is so stupid to me. That said, if it gets some people who would have bought an ICE because they can’t live without pissing off the neighborhood to instead buy an EV, I guess that’s net better. I’ve got more important things to get upset over
No, fuck EV cars too.
Good take actually
Gods I fucking predicted this. The motor heads need the vroom vroom or they won’t make the green transition. Now, it is legally required for electric cars to make a sound so they don’t sneak up on blind folks. Why not make it a cool sound that isn’t obnoxious?
Now I’m imagining “In the Hall of the Mountain King” playing increasingly fast and loud as the car sneaks up on a half deaf person.
Okay but I want that so bad now
