Cycads, the family still exists today. Cool plants related to conifers.
If you read the wikipedia article, I think they spent more time specifically saying “IT’S NOT A PALM,” then actually saying what a cycad is. Lmao. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycad
It’s kinda like a palm
They are confused a lot, and not related closely. Their similarly is an example of convergent evolution.
Palms produce flowers and therefore fruit. Cycads produce strobili, or cones, like pines, spruces, firs, etc. The “pineapple” like texture of the bark represents individual past leaves. They form a helicoid pattern, whereas palms have a more traditional trunk like appearance.
Cycads be cool yo. Their megastrobili, the female cones can be quite huge and have a garish color that almost makes them look spray painted.
The male cones, microstrobili, often look like they’re hanging dong.
And a volcano!
Often referred to as Sago Palms. All parts (especially the seeds) are extremely toxic to dogs. Found this out the hard way after our dog got ahold of some part of it while my mother and I were uprooting one. We nearly didn’t get her to the vet in time and she had lots of odd health issues for the rest of her life.
Look what you’ve done! It’s spreading.
