Be aware that Mapy is made by Seznam, which is basically the Czech equivalent of Google, including the ads and privacy concerns.

It’s by far my favourite service for hiking maps, can highly recommend! For car navigation it’s definitely behind google, but they’re making progress

I gave it a shot but without public transport navigation it’s pretty useless for me. Also I don’t enjoy being bugged to create an account or pay 19€ for a “premium user badge” just to make that “please give us money” button go away that’s permanently covering part of the map.

Its proprietary freemium shitware that misses basic features unless you create an online account and pay. Looks like its already increasingly being enshittified if you look at recent reviews. Im not entirely opposed to paying for stuff like this but if its not open source and completely online dependent, then they can change the terms, price and quality at any time. Fuck off all the way with that.

The actual traffic data cant be open sourced either, because that would give random people access to the location of users. There is nothing preventing them from selling this data to anyone and it should be assumed that they do. They might just be using google data for this anyway tho

Sorry but this is just bs. The only important feature that’s behind a paywall is downloading offline maps for more than one country at the same time.

And services like this have to pay for the development and upkeep costs in some way, since they’re not selling your data like Google does. There’s nothing wrong with having a paid tier.

They totally are selling your data. Seznam is a targeted advertising company just like Google.

Ah yes offline maps, totally not a core functionality for a map app. Its also not a one and done thing its a fuckin subscription. Even for the free features you need an account. WTF?

they can change the terms, price and quality at any time

Also this is reason enough anyways. Dont cuck yourself involuntarily by using and depending on software like this.

      Data Sources and Their Currency

Data for the Czech Republic are completely created and managed by the cartographic editors of Mapy.com, while the rest of the world comes from OpenStreetMap. The cartographic editors strive to keep the map continuously updated; however, it may happen that the map does not reflect the real condition in the field. Discrepancies/feedback can be reported via feedback.

Ir is awesome! But dont buy it. Try it for free and see if you like it first. I’ve been using them for many years (without paying anything) and wouldn’t use anything else. (From the other map apps I tried osm, organic maps, and google.)

Regular OSM doesn’t have elevation data as well as many other info that mapy does provide. And the map visualisation is much better than any competitor IMO, especially for hiking maps.

I’m not blaming you but whose fault is that? Add that shit to OSM! Don’t work for the assholes coasting off of FOSS labour of other people, subvert them!

Mapy is a financial supporter of OSM, which isn’t free to develop btw. So they’re not leeching of FOSS labour, they’re helping to make it possible.

No, OSM is free for everyone, doesn’t matter if you make profit off of it or not, so they don’t have to pay for anything. They’re choosing to support OSM to help it improve (which is also in their own benefit).

Amazing. They are the best app for hiking (Komoot might be nice for planning, but nobody has the paths mapped so well - middle of nowhere, north of Sweden, Georgia, Mauritius, everywhere ti had silly small paths mapped for me).

I hope they can also be an option in the city. I don’t drive, but I need to check their public transport coverage, and accuracy of opening hours

Honestly, most of their data outside of Czechia is just OpenStreetMaps, so you could use many other apps that are actually opensource: OsmAnd, Organic Maps, etc.

OsmAnd has never let med down. It was my go-to map for hiking, even before the carrot king deckded to fuck up relations with Europe.

You can get the premium app from F-Droid. Just remember to donate to the developers if you like it.

The thing for me about mapy is not that they have fantastic database but layout of their maps - it’s one of a few easily readable maps out there and unfortunately, especially for biking/trekking. I’ve tried alternatives but they’re miserable most of the time.
