The Israel boycott requires a lot of mental math. Boycotting companies for operating in the occupied territories for example. I have to know which companies are there before I purchase something, which is just a lot of research. Most people don’t do that.

Doesn’t help some countries tried to get it on the books that boycotting Israel is antisemitism, which is still a touchy subject in Europe unless you’re a neo-nazi. It’s also a conflict that’s been ongoing since the formation of Israel and while horrific, doesn’t touch the lives of most Europeans. The US is making direct threats to people’s prosperity and safety.

I’m not saying that the BDS movement isn’t good BTW, it’s clearly a noble cause. But outside of the difficulty of keeping up with it, it has also become somewhat alike to vegan snobbery, with the most rabid adherents feeling a sort of moral superiority to others who can’t afford to spend that much time researching every purchase or can’t change the products they choose.

Most in the US boycott movement say “boycott where you can”. They understand it’s not possible for all people to just let go of everything. For example autistic people who need certain brands because of their routine, or people who need medication that’s under US patents. I’ve never heard such thoughtful consideration from the BDS movement.

Thanks for taking the time to write this as it reflects how I feel.

I need to spend more time to transition away from companies /countries that I don’t align with

It means in the grand scheme of things sending military equipment and giving political cover to Israel to ethnically cleanse Palestinians is a little worse than having a McDonald’s. But apparently for most Europeans it’s not.

What active steps are Europeans doing to boycott Israeli goods and services. Jack shit. What are they doing to boycott the US? A whole online community and economic movement.

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the major supporter of Israel is the USA. Do you think boycotting Israeli services is going to stop the US from sending them stuff? What do you want to treat, the symptom or the cause?

Clearly it won’t stop the US bible thumpers. But who are the next biggest supporters? Germany, France, UK. They provide diplomatic and military cover for the atrocities happening in Palestine.

Let’s just do nothing then. Continue as before and keep buying US good, sending our money to the US for them to make billions of dollars worth of weapons for Israel compared to the millions provided by other countries together. Let’s further reduce the issue to “Israel vs McDonalds” and create a nice dichotomy, since everything in life is a choice between two things. There’s never more than that: right and wrong. If you don’t boycott Israel, you are evil and deserve to be thrown into a deep well. Nothing else you ever have done, do, or will do is right. It’s like you’re actually there in Israel putting the gun into the throat of a young Gazan baby and pulling the trigger. And all of that because you couldn’t withstand the temptation of a tasty, tasty McDonalds burger. Filth.

“We are starting to see a sanctioning of the US and its policies in people’s attitudes, but there is a gap between the position people have in principle and what they do in practice,” Kraus told the Observer.

Always has been. People are against child labor, in principle, but will happily buy chocolate, a new iPhone, or whatever new fast fashion trend tells them to buy. People love convenience.
